ABOUT LIU PAOSHAN
CALLIGRAPHER. ARTIST
Liu PaoShan,(1929~2022), art name YeMa (meaning, wild horse), born in Tianjin, was educated from traditional Chinese private school. From his early age he practiced calligraphy, beginning by imitating the semi-cursive script of master Wang Xizhi. His family background allowed him to move around and experience diverse and local cultures around China. In particular, he was profoundly influenced by western art when he lived in Shanghai due to his family’s close relationship with French diplomats and international social circles.
Inspired by both oriental and western aesthetics, plus his working-experience as a senior editor and typesetter in major newspapers (China News, China Post, Central Daily News, etc.), he carved out his own signature style. Through intuitive composition, structure, and dimensions of text and space, his brush strokes swell up as crescendo of flowing energy. His distinctive style gradually evolves as a graceful interpretation between calligraphy and art. This exhibition is presenting calligraphy aesthetics and exploring a contemporary view by blending different brushworks into visual espressions.
